SMS caller id issues

I have my buddy under "+1 (234) 567-8901" and it was working fine when I was texting him.

Now today he replies and it goes under a new sms thread under "2345678901".

Can't the iPhone tell that those 2 numbers are the same? Is there a fix for this?

Take off the "1" in the beginning

Did removing the 1 solve your issue ?

It did for a while.

I have him as (234) 567-8901, but a couple days ago his caller ID just disappeared, showing only his phone #.

I guess it's a bug with SMS. I use imessage with everyone else.
