Is it worth upgrading to new core i5 macbook pro?

I have a mid 2009 13" macbook pro with following specs

2.26 GHz core 2 duo
8Gb 1066 MHz PC3-8500 DDR3 SDRAM
320GB HDD
Snow leopard and Lion installed

currently it does not power up and Apple think it might needs a logic board which will 350 pounds , how ever the new 13" macbook pro will cost me 850 pounds with student discount .this swill have the following specs

2.4 GHz (2430M) Intel Core i5
4GB 1333 MHz PC3-10600 DDR3 SDRAM
500GB HDD
Lion installed

I need both lion and SL in my laptop and I learned you can install SL after bit of hassle on new macbook pro laptops.

What would you do if you were in a similar situation? I don't mind going for the new model if it gives me a considerable performance boost .

PS: I do bit of programming and some photoshop work in addition to normal web browsing .

id wait till the 2012 macbooks are released later this year ASSUMING u have a backup computer already.

if not then the 2011 ones will be fine. apple does offer refurbs in the store as well for further price savings.

If you need SL then now is the time to buy. If you wait for the newer models then may not allow, Actually Apple will not allow, you to install SL on them.

You can install SL on any new Mac being sold right now, Late 2011 models. But you need SL version 10.6.7 or .8 for it to work.

Since you have an older Mac with SL on the drive you may be able to clone that into a separate partition on the new MBP.

Thanks guys ,

Waiting is not an option since this is my only laptop . as for needing SL it is only till lion gets settles .For example I need Sl to run xcode analyzer because of a bug in lion .But hopefully those issues will be solved in the futer so I can migrate to Lion completely.

So my question is is there a great deal of difference in my mac and the brand new ones sold right now?

Is worth upgrading from a 2009 model to a 2011 model? or is it better to wait a bit more ...

It is worth upgrading in my opinion. I have the 13" MBP with the i7 and its awesome. As you said your only laptop died so waiting doesn't seem to be an option for you. I can tell you that the current gen are awesome machines and will serve you very very well.

Yes it is. Sandy bridge is ridiculously quick.

Old article but this is a benchmark comparison of the early 2011 vs early 2010. The entry level 13" was faster than ALL of the 2010 mbps, even the upgraded 15" and 17". According to the benchmarks, the early 2011 13" is 76% faster than the early 2010 13". You can imagine the performance upgrade from the 2009 models compared the late 2011.

The performance increase may not always translate to real time performance but expect it to be there when you need it (running cpu heavy apps)

Thanks for the suggestions guys I was gonna go for the new model after reading your opinions but I just recieved a call form Apple store saying that it was only the top case which was faulty in my macbook pro, so will only cost me 146 pounds. (I didn't even think they work on sundays )

So i'm gonna get it repaired this time.
