Applications Crash

Every time I open Finder and try to access Applications, it closes. How can I stop this from crashing and view my Applications?

This is Mac 10.6.8. I can't even update any software because when it gets to restarting the computer it says no software was updated due to errors.

I'd appreciate any help. Thanks.

Boot from the recovery DVD to run disk utility and repair permissions.

I repaired disk/permissions. Still can't open my Applications folder in Finder or System Update.

Create a new user account. Log in to it. Does it happen there too?

How do you create a new user account? I just logged into Guest and everything is a-ok!

Creating a new user account

Isolating an issue by using another user account

Creating and logging in to a test account is just one troubleshooting step to find out if the issue is confined to your user account or if it's a system wide problem.

Regardless of if its a system wide problem or a user account problem I'd highly suggest (if you haven't done so already) backing up your stuff.
