1. Holding the botton for Siri if they launch it on the Ipad 3.

2. No way of doing a hard reset.

3. No way to use multi tasking with IOS5.

4. They would have to add more menus to exit apps.

5. The button is as Apple as the slide to unlock feature.

6. No way to get a screen grab if they remove it as you need to hold power and the button.

7. The home button is used for switching from page to page in the app/menu.

8. It would break away from tradition of any other IOS device.

9. On the first page if you press it then it will bring the keyboard up.

10. You can press it to get the light back on to unlock.

Probably loads more reasons.

Only one reason, without a home button to fail, (like 3 did on the iPhone 4's I owned) there's not much incentive to toss it early

If Apple should decide to eliminate the old school button, it will definitely be the one to have. If Samsung can avoid a mechanical button, so can Apple.

After using my Galaxy S II, then picking up my iP4S, the Apple belly button feels awfully slow & strange.

Are we being over ran with noobs today? The iPad 2 as we know it can already function without the god damn home button! Stop making points that you have not looked into. Multi tasking and backing out of apps can be done with gestures.

I disagree with 3,4,5,9,10 but I also don't see them ditching the home button.

My number 1 reason would be - There's no reason for Apple to get rid of it. IMO, it'd be like Apple taking away the click from the trackpad and forcing you to tap to click.

First thing I will praise on my Ipad 3 will be the NICE button. :apple::p

Old skool button?

What next no buttons atall..we should all power our Ipads up with Siri "shout Power"?

Why would anyone assume that removing one thing wouldn't result in adding/replacing it with another?

1) There are alternatives to that.
2) There are alternatives to that.
3) Four finger swipe up shows the multitasking bar.
4) Five finger pinch closes an app.
6) There are alternatives to that.
7) See 3) and a four or five finger swipe left or right lets you switch between apps
9) It just slides to Spotlight, and it's unnecessary.
10) You can also press the sleep button to wake it up.

Button?

Can you take a screenshot without the home button?

Just asking no need to be abrasive.

Foxy

It's possible the home button will remain, even likely, but it won't necessarily be because Apple can't do the things on that list without a hardware button.

Apple's supposed to be this innovator and brilliant tech company. I think they can figure solutions to accomplish everything on that list without a physical button if they wanted to.

It could be the rumored elongated swiping or capacitive button. Or it could remain the way it is. We'll see in a week's time.

Perhaps an S gesture with two fingers?

2. No way of doing a hard reset.
perhaps hold Power button and either volume up or down button

3. No way to use multi tasking with IOS5.
slide upwards with 4 fingers

4. They would have to add more menus to exit apps.
pinch with 5 fingers

5. The button is as Apple as the slide to unlock feature.
so was the white plastic Macbook, and the colourful iMac

6. No way to get a screen grab if they remove it as you need to hold power and the button.
could use power button and a volume button again.

7. The home button is used for switching from page to page in the app/menu.
no it's not, its used to go back to the home page, which you can do by swiping

8. It would break away from tradition of any other IOS device.
iPod Nano doesn't have a Home Button, and also Designers don't follow tradition or we'd would all still be using record players.

9. On the first page if you press it then it will bring the keyboard up.
that takes you to the spotlight search screen, which you can access by simply sliding your finger to the right whist on the home screen
10. You can press it to get the light back on to unlock.
you can also open the smart cover or press the power button.
Probably loads more reasons.
although probably not - do you even own an iPad?

FYI - i'm not really fussed weather there's a home button or not, I'm quite happy with gestures, but if it's there i'll probably still use it on occasion, it doesn't bother me.

I respectfully disagree just a bit on your Gestures argument. Some Apps have multi-touch gestures that conflict with iOS 5 Gestures. One that comes to mind is SketchBook Pro.

That being said, I can see it happening. Either way I'm good with or without it.

SketchBook Pro has a gesture for four finger swipe up, left, right, or five finger pinch?

The biggest problem with the multitasking gestures is that a lot of people aren't aware of them. They're not immediately apparent like a button.

Agreed. These people are crazy to think Apple's removing the home button in favor of multitasking gestures, especially on only the 3rd iteration. I'll eat my shorts if I'm wrong and have insulted them in vain.

There is no reason why Apple couldn't do away with the home button. It's been a source of problems in many a thread here over the iPads life-cycle.

I'd like to see it go, but I doubt that it will.

Exactly what I posted on a thread, trust
Me the chances are very low of them removing the button.

I am personally not saying that there wont be a home button on the new iPad, I am just saying that it could happen with the current OS. I also very much guarentee athat it will be removed at some point. It is the next obvious desgn change in my view.
