Is is ok to install apps while apps still running?

Is it ok to install apps (either drag type or pkg) while other apps are running? Coming from windows I know it's best to quit all programs before installing anything. Does that apply to OS X?
 
It's ok. Well except for a couple of exceptions and they let you know about it and wait for the conflicting application to be exited.
