Can someone help clarify if the Non LTE versions have the GPS chip?

Nope. GPS is part if the Wireless (4G) Chip. The Wifi iPad only gets its position through WiFi Assisted Positioning.

No, but WiFi-only iPad will get GPS location when connected to iPhone 4/4S Personal Hotspot.

And frankly, how often would you need true GPS location?

If I use mywii from my iphone 4 will the ipad get the gps location as well? This is for future navigation apps.

I have purchased the wifi only 64gb version. I have also purchased the 4G AT&T version. Honestly I had the 3g version of the ipad earlier and never used it. I still don't see any use for the 3g version.

I used Navigon on my iPad 2 3G and I am confident it helped with the accuracy. That is the only reason I am going with the 4G 3rd Gen iPad this time.

so could i use my WiFi iPad as a large GPS device as long as it was tethered to my connected iPhone?

i used to be able to tether my android device (DroidX) to iPad1 and 2, and it would give me GPS location.

will try with my gnexus once i get the new ipad in my hands.

Can't happen. The iPad can't "receive" GPS data from another device over BT or Wi-Fi. Something else was at play.

it sure can. i'm currently tethered via 4G LTE (Verizon) hotspot on my iPad3 and I am getting location data.

iPad is grabbing location data from my Galaxy Nexus.

Tethering produces a gps signal, just not as frequent. So it's not accurate enough for navigation.
