I'll be in CA for a couple of days. Even so, AT&T's rates are crazy. Any suggestions? Unlock and buy a pay-as-you-sim card? Stick to wifi hotspots? Thoughts?

Do what works for you. If you can go with wifi hotspots only, this is obviously going to be your cheapest option. if not, and you are able to unlock, a pay as you go option would be a good way to go.
