Original MBA screens dark after turning on

My original MBA screens dark after turning on. I hear the gong then the Apple icon appears with the spinning wheel below. After sixty seconds the screen turns black.

I have reset the PRAM. Any suggestions on how I can get it working again will be appreciated.

The brightness isn't turned all the way down, is it? Would that 60 seconds be the system booting up?
