I read that when camping, iodine can be used to purify water you find in rivers or lakes. But how does the iodine purify it?

Iodine doesn't purify water, it kills the "bugs" in water that make you sick. It's toxic... If the water is not too cold, or too dirty, it will kill the harmful but it tastes horrible after.

You are much better off filtering if you plan on drinking the water afterward.
