I have an older iMac. I believe one of the first with the Intel Chipset. I cannot upgrade it to Lion. I am thinking of using it strictly as a monitor and plugging a new or refurbished Mac Mini into it. Is this possible or even a good idea?

It might work with AirDisplay or ScreenRecycler or if you are really good with electronics and can modify the iMac physically, as it has no proper video input.

Take a look at this: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1110159/

The problem with using software is that the monitor will lag like mad.

I don't know whether the early iMacs will support target display mode, but if they do, thats another option.
