Due to an irresolvable issue with my current Apple ID, I want to start anew with a new Apple ID. However, when I purchased and registered my AppleCare, it was under my old ID. Would my AppleCare be forfeit if I format my iMac and associate it with my new ID? Or is AppleCare tied to the iMac's serial number regardless of the owner?

Applecare is registered to the machines serial number which is why you will often see people selling Macs WITH the Applecare in place. On that side of things you should be fine, but if it were me, I would either resolve the ID issue with Apple OR..ensure you visit the my product support pages and change your Mac's etc over to the new ID to be safe.
