iTunes crashes whenever I restore iPhone 3GS

My sister gave me her old 3GS and I restored it to wipe everything from it. But whenever I try to restore it, my iTunes crashes and I get that annoying Microsoft error report. My iTunes version is the most current one. What should I do? I can't get past the DFU mode and I can't restore it either. =\
