How much of a performance drop should I expect if I end up buying a 13 MBA? I have a 2.53GHz i5 17MBP with 8GB of ram and a 120GB Intel SSD.

Thanks!

Hrm, it doesn't list my machine, but I assume it is pretty close given other i5 speeds? What does it mean in real world, i.e., where is the MBA slow?

Since the MBA is a bit faster CPU wise, as it seems, the only drawback is the 4 GB less RAM.

Open Activity Monitor and go to the System Memory* tab and look for Free and Inactive and Page Outs and Swap used and report back, thus we/you can see, if you need 8 GB RAM or can live with 4 GB RAM. This is best used after a day of your usual work.
