find my mac is pointless if the thief restores the OS?

if somewhere were to steal my mac then restore loin does it make 'find my mac' useless since the data is erased?
 
If the computer is completely wiped, then yes, it will of course be useless. If they do not wipe the Recovery Partition, I don't know if that alone could allow it to continue working (I suspect it might, but haven't read anything stating either way, nor tried it for myself).
