You get what you pay for. As far as I know the Apple is the only company who makes a Smart Cover since that is the name of the product. Just because another company has a cover with magnets does not make it a smart cover. It is just a cover with magnets in it.
 
IMO it's better to spend more money once on a quality item than less money on a lower quality item that you'll end up having to replace at least once.

...and that's why I wouldn't buy a knockoff. The Apple version has little plastic standoffs that work well as long as you wipe any dust/dirt out of the way. Knockoff versions, who knows.

Also, have heard people complaining of knockoffs being stiff, not holding stand positions well, so forth. If you search American Amazon for Smart Cover, you find a whole bunch of listings with bad reviews and it becomes obvious they're talking about knockoffs.

I'm thinking i might just buy one and see what its like. If it's crap, then its not a massive loss.

I got is this one the other day and I'll tell you a few things about the budget smart covers. The metal where it attaches to the side with the magnets is not very good. It's not matte like Apples and it is quite poor quality but acceptable.

The smart cover material is very good and the side that covers the screen has got a nice microfiber material. It was quite creased when I first got it but that has gone now and it functions perfectly. All in all, you get what you pay for and it's nowhere near as good as Apples.
