First, very simply, what I want is to be able to plug my Android phone into my Macbook Pro and manage my music using a program called iSyncr. I might even want to drop a few other things on there as well (such as Roms, TV shows, and the like). To do this, I need the two mass storage drives in my phone to mount and stay mounted on my mac. If my computer drops the connection mid-transfer, that's bad news! Unfortunately, that is what is happening again and again with increasing frequency on both USB ports on my Macbook pro. The ports have become so flaky that I'm actually scared to plug my phone in!
I have ruled out the phone and the USB cable. The phone will connect and mount properly on my wife's 2007 iMac (running Lion). In fact, the phone mounted well on my Macbook Pro when I used my (now dead) Windows 7 partition.
Indeed, everything points to a problem with my USB ports and the Lion operating system specifically. Since installing Lion, the computer has already managed to corrupt a flash drive (because it would constantly unmount the drive) that was working flawlessly in Snow Leopard. My phone is not responding to well either!
What I have already tried:
Resetting SMC (doesn't help)
Zapping PRAM (doesn't help)
Clean reinstall of Lion (doesn't help - although I did import my profile. not sure if that makes a difference)
Changing out the IOUSBfamily kext (I may have used the wrong ones though)
Developer tools: USB Prober (this kind of helps. The storage will stay mounted but the transfer speed is abysmal)
SyncMate: This program works! It uses MacFuse, I think, to do this. However, I feel that $40 is a big pop just to get my music onto my phone.
I have a few more months of Apple Care left. I was going to send it in once more (if possible) to have the backlight bleed around the edges fixed (a common issue with this model), but not until June. Is there a solution to this? I really don't want to send in the computer any time soon.
Full configuration:
Macbook Pro (Late 2008) 2.53 C2D, 8GB RAM, 750 GB Hybrid Seagate MomentusXT. Used as a laptop during the day and in clamshell mode (or dual display) with Dell U2410 in the evening (on DVI connection). BT wireless keyboard and trackpad when on the large display. (should be enough information for you!
)
Thanks for your help!
Edit: I called this in to Apple. Went through a few diagnostic prerequisites over the phone. They said the ports weren't behaving properly, so the computer is going in for repair.
