iPhone 4 SIM in 3G Hotspot?

I just ordered an unlocked 3G hotspot for an upcoming foreign trip as I think that will be my best option for data while traveling. I would like to test it out before leaving the US and was wondering if I could pop my iPhone 4 sim into it to test it? I realize I would need to have microsim to sim adapter....I think I have one laying around somewhere. But once I do that, would my data plan work on the hotspot? Is there any special configuration necessary, and if so, what are the settings?
