I've been searching for a few days now, but I can't seem to find the exact answer I'm looking for.

I have a used AT&T iPhone 3g that I intend to use with my T-Mobile plan.

- The phone is currently at 3.1.2, but I'd like to update to 4.2.1

- I don't have access to an AT&T SIM currently. I used my sister's yesterday to attempt to update the firmware, but I got the 3194 error. I haven't been able to try another computer because I don't have a SIM.

- I don't know the baseband, because I can't get past the No SIM/Emergency call screen.

How should I go about this? SIM-less jailbreak, update, then re-jailbreak, then unlock? Or is there a better alternative? I know I can download the 4.2.1 update from redmondpie, etc, but I'm not sure exactly how to install it without a SIM.

Thanks in advance!

I would stay on 3.1.2, 4.2.1 will make the 3G sluggish and hard to use. Since your sister has AT&T, she can get the iPhone unlocked for you.

Or you can jailbreak with Redsn0w (also activates the iPhone) and unlock with ultrasn0w.
