What is the most an early 2009 17 inch macbook pro can be upgraded to reach maximum potential?

Most tasks? What, if any, tasks does the machine perform less than amazing? I'm really trying to asses whether it can perform better than the average new PC, and how long it should last me from today....

There's just no way it'll match the performance of a new PC given that the 2009 is a Penryn C2D processor and the current is an i7 quad core. Couple that with GeForce 9600 w/512mb vs AMD 6770 w/1gb for the video system it''s just not apples to apples.

Not to say there's anything wrong with the 2009, there's not. It's just that 3 years of technology happens quickly and there's no way it'll be the same as current. It should still have a couple good years left in it if not abused.
