I am continually finding it difficult/impossible to find certain messages I have previously sent; they seem to just disappear (i.e. they aren't in "sent", "all mail", or "trash."

Regardless of that mystery, can you answer this:

If I delete a message in a conversation thread, I assume all messages in that thread are deleted?
By the same token, if I delete a message, does all the associated messages I sent also go in the trash (i.e. they get removed from the "Sent" folder")?

I like GMail...but some of the ways it seems to handle message conversations/threads is sort of confusing (or, perhaps, I'm just a little dense).

I'm thinking I probably need to stop using Delete and only use Archive because of this ongoing confusion....

Thanks for your clarification with this!

I used to have similar issues when i deleted messages, but now that I only ever archive i can find all my old messages. Just start archiving messages, there is loads of space there.

Thanks -- that is sort of what I figured. Good advice I will start showing the Archive button some love!

if you still want to save space you can delete emails that you won't ever want to look up like deals etc, i only archive emails that i might want again.

You can also opt for the Non-Conversation mode, which lists each E-mail separately.

Not as convenient for following conversations, but it does allow you to just delete individual messages.

Click on this little Icon, and select Settings.

You can always rebuild the conversations when you need too, by just going there again, and selecting Conversation Mode.

Or just use the mail app. Easier than logging into gmail all the time.
