I have been given a broken iPhone 2G. It looks like it has been dropped on its top side, and damaged the headphone jack ribbon, now replaced. All appears to be working fine, except...

I can get the phone to load to the "connect to itunes" page, but when I insert the connector into the bottom of the phone the screen changes to multicoloured stripes and eventually a solid colour (usually white). This means I cannot restore atm.

I realised this morning that this happens even with the usb end of my cable is free and not plugged into anything? WEIRD!

Would this suggest it is a hardware problem with the phone? Loose ribbon? Damaged ribbon? Short somewhere?

Any advice appreciated,
Thanks,
Rich
