I'm thinking of going on a submarine tour on my cruise next week and
Was wondering if my device work in a submarine.

Probably not - the hull will likely act as a sort of Faraday cage and block the signal.

1) You probably will not get service down there
2) They will probably make you put your phone in "airplane mode" or off

....it will still have power, but unlikely to have reception.

what "iDevice" do you mean, and what would you consider "working"? Everything except cellular functions should work, there's no reason you couldn't take pictures, etc. while down there.

What are you trying to do while you're underwater that can't wait till you surface?

BTW, not being snarky, I'm genuinely curious.

Radio waves don't work well under water. If I had to guess reception would go to zero anything more than 3-4 feet under.

I've been on a docked sub and I can tell you as soon as you start down that ladder your reception is gone!

Submarine

An Android would work. And make you a sandwich.

:D

Surprised the trolls haven't thought of this yet

Are you actually going underwater or is this a tour of a submarine that's docked with the hatches open?

If it's docked with hatches open you're device should work just fine. I was at Pearl Harbor last week and my iPhone 4 worked just fine in the sub. If you're going underwater I can't say, but that would be one hell of a tour.

Correct. I have had the same experience.

There's also the whole camera issue, although I have heard the Navy sometimes allows camera-equipped devices on the boats, even though the shipyard can't have them anywhere.

No. I can tell you from personal experience that when you have 5 bars on the top of the boat while it is in drydock, you will have no service once you're in the boat. Unless you were near an open trunk? Or for some reason they put a temporary repeater in while it was where it was?

Forget Faraday cage. Just brute force block the signal. There's just a *little* bit of metal in those things.
