I'm considering buying a firewire 4-bay RAID enclosure for added storage with redundancy. I'm hesitant because I'm not sure how scalable they are. I was interested in a Drobo but their performance and reliability seem poor from what I've read.

If I were to buy a RAID enclosure like the following 3.5in 4 Drive eSATA USB FireWire External SATA RAID Enclosure and I initially loaded it with 4x1TB drives in a RAID5 configuration, what is the process when I need to expand the capacity? Can I just swap out the 1TB drives for 2TB drives one at a time and wait for the array to rebuild for each? Then when they are all 2TB drives would all the drive space be usable?

You'll want something like a Drobo or Synology to resize like that. The Drobo was slow on the initial version. I believe it is much better now.
