Is there a way to make my 2008 iMac a main display for a Mac Mini?

Yes.
If they are connected on a network, just run screen sharing and view the mini's screen on the iMac. Slower than a real monitor, but you can run the mini that way.
You could also try ScreenRecycler; it's a variant of VNC that makes the other Mac's screen more like a second monitor in appearance.
