Traveling with iPad

Hi All
Due to go to Europe from Australia in 4 days time - I've unlocked my iPhone from Telstra but they assured me the iPad1 is not locked so could be used with prepaid sim/data card. In Italy. Is this correct? Who has done this? Any problems?

True. All iPads in the USA are sold unlocked. I live in Orlando. See tons of tourists buying iPads in apple store to most likely bring it back home.

If you bought a iPad on a long-term contract, your iPad is likely to be locked. Otherwise, everyone would just buy a cheap operator-subsidized iPad/iPhone, and use another SIM from the discount operator or MVNO (Mobile virtual network operator).

However, no iPad in the US is sold with a long-term contract, therefore, no iPad will be locked if you bought it here. This is not true in the rest of the world.
