Anyone has any ideas why Quick Look does not or rather slow on previewing video files stored on external drives...? I'm on Mountain Lion with this issue, but Snow Leopard seems to work fine. Audio and other document related files seems to work fine on both OSes.

Thanks.

Strange - I've benchmarked Quick Look with standard SD MP4 files. I haven't found it slow. It doesn't fetch the entire file in the memory to render the image. Benchmark-wise, it renders a thumbnail of a 1.5GB video in about 200-300 ms over a USB2 connection. It doesn't try to fetch thumbnails of invisible parts of the list. (Nevertheless, I've disabled Quick Look entirely to avoid the very annoying QuicklookSatellite CPU usage bug I was always faced during video conversions.)

What videos do you have? Can you benchmark icon generation speed?
