Java question

In light of the recent announcements today about Java security. I wanted to disable Java on my iMac running 10.8.1 I tried to click the enabled checkbox to disable but I'm not able to. I ready have it disabled in Safari but wanted to see if I can disable it in the system preferences pane and any ideas of how to disable it in the system preferences would be welcome
