As per the title really... why did Apple discontinue giving out Tech Tool Deluxe with an AppleCare purchase?
I'm still on my 2010 MBP so have a copy (thankfully never had to use it), but just curious really.

Tech Tool Deluxe reminds me of the old CheckIt PC software. It runs tests on your Mac memory, etc. It is possible these are included on the Lion recovery partition somewhere. I've had very good luck with the hardware on all my Macs so I've only used TTD once or twice and to me losing it is no great loss.

I suppose you could still download it through MacUpdate. I looked at Micromat's web site and they are selling newer versions (with more capabilities) for about $100. I'm not buying. I have the old TTD that came with AppleCare/dotMac and I haven't used it in a very long time.
