OSX Update and Restart Problems - HELP!

Hi

Two Questions:

1. Having done an OSX 10.8.1 update that failed, 'About this Mac' shows 10.8.1!!! Is there any other way I can check if updates have been applied successfully?

2. Several times recently on shutting down / restarting I get an error message saying Mail / Firefox / Pages… canceled shut down. They were not running ( no light under the dock icon ). Any thoughts as to a) What caused it and b) How do I fix it?
