I've done a lot of searching on the web on this and the only two recommendations I can find are to either use CHUD tools or the following command and then rebooting:

NVRAM SMT=0

Neither of these methods work (I've tried them both as a normal user and as root). All the cores, both virtual and real are still there and working no matter what I do.

I'm using a 2011 Macbook Pro.

Where these methods have been recommended, people have responded by saying they don't work but no one seems to give any further advice or say conclusively that it can't be done.

I want to disable it to do some testing out of curiosity (on my PC disabling hyperthreading results in a zero drop in performance across the applications I use).
