Broken/Unreadable SD Card Help & Suggestions

Hi Everyone! I really hope some folks around here can help out my friend with a memory card problem.

My friend got in touch with me because her SD card was stuck in her camera. After bringing the camera to a local shop the clerk was able to retrieve the card, however both the camera and SD card have been damaged. I haven't seen either the camera or the card but according to her some of the plastic on the card is broken and I have no clue the condition of the camera.

Now to the issue at hand. After this whole ordeal she is unable to retrieve the pictures from the SD card and I would like to know if anyone here has run into a simliar problem and can recommend a solution. Apparently the folks at the camera shop have tried inserting the card into a few USB card readers (though I suggest trying the one on my iMac too) but nothing is working for her. Does anyone have advice her for? Is there a software solution you've used in the past to recover pictures from an SD card?

SD memory card unreadable

I had a similar problem with my SD memory card. It could no longer be read in the camera or a card reader and I had over 7000 photos on it!
I googled it and found the control chip was likely to have become faulty. I was rescued by ringing this incredible company called Recoverfab. I can't fault their service at all. I was contacted really promptly after completing their online query form, then it was just a question of sending the memory card by post and waiting. I didn't wait long, getting an update within 3 days to say they had received the card, and then after another few days the best news- all photos recovered and now saved onto several DVDs and ready to be dispatched back to me. All I can say is thank goodness for specialist companies and customer device like this, and I give 10 gold stars to Leopold Hiersche who personally runs Recoverfab (www.recoverfab.com).
 
If the card is physcally broken, than complicates things and your're only chance might indeed be to go to a specialized recovery service.

If she inserts the card into a reader, does the card mount and pop up in the finder (or disk util). I had succes once with recovery software but for that to work, the disk should mount and show up in the finder.

I would expect people at a camera shop to be a little more careful with these things or at least backup the photos before they start forcing things out.

Other than a professional data recovery service, which can cost upwards of $2000 per service, I'm afraid there is no way to recover the photos. :(
