Verizon iPhone 5 Abroad (Germany)?

I am very close to ultimately switching from Android to iPhone. A question I have though is whether or not it's possible to use the US Verizon iPhone 5 in Germany. I'll be living abroad for a few months, so having that ability would be nice. I'm definitely sticking with Verizon because I like their coverage here in the US, and if the Verizon iPhone won't work abroad, I guess I'll use some cheap pre-paid phone while I'm in Germany...
 
Or maybe another way to ask is will Verizon unlock my phone and if so, will that allow me to buy another SIM card in Germany (maybe prepaid?). I would still keep my US Verizon contract.
