iPhone 5 porting number

So I ordered an iPhone 5 from Verizon, going to be delivered on the 21st already received Fedex tracking info. Its coming with a new number. I want to port my (Virgin mobile prepaid) phones number to the iPhone 5. Is this possible? If its possible do I have to activate the iPhone 5 before porting it? or No?
