That's for Snow Leopard Server.

Security Update 2012-004 Server (Snow Leopard) File Size: 276.45 MB
Security Update 2012-004 (Snow Leopard) File Size: 2.36 MB

For what it's worth, if you actually click the second link you posted (for the non-server edition of the update), the .dmg you receive is 257 MB. Apple's summary on the right side of the download page is grossly incorrect.

Running the non-server edition of Snow Leopard here, and the Software Update app wants to send me a file weighing in at 269.9 MB.

Oh, and [I know what I'm about to say will drive GGJstudios crazy;)] but don't think that Snow Leopard is now as secure as Lion or ML because of this Security Update.
SL likely is vulnerable to the several dozen issues that were patched with Safari 6 which is not available for SL.

GGJstudios: If you have to ask, you're not affected, so no worries :)

I'm using plug-ins called WideMail and Mail.appetizer.

But regardless of what those specific plug-ins are, all plug-ins have been disabled.
That's why I asked. I wasn't aware of anyone using plug-ins with Mail.

GGJstudios: WideMail enables a "column-view" like UI, much like the new Mail in Lion and up.

Mail.appetizer enables a preview pane of new emails. Much like Growl except only for Mail.app.

Both plug-ins have been rendered useless with the subsequent OS updates, but my MacBook is stuck on SL, so I depended on these plug-ins for my daily workflow.

It's too bad because these plug-ins are no longer being actively developed, so who knows when, if ever, they will be updated to be compatible with the new Mail...

Hearld

stopped working on my machine with the update. I really liked Herald. I'm running Lion. Will it work if I upgrade to Mountain Lion - something I have been putting off.

Any way to undue the update and go back to where I was before the update? I have regular time machine back ups.

EDIT - just discovered Herald v. 2.1.3 works with updated Lion. No worries.

Desktop Empty??

This morning I got the notice that I had a security update to install (2012-004).

It went through the usual process and after it rebooted, my desktop was completely empty. The background photo is the same but all my icons for folders, files, etc are gone.

In addition, when I try to open Finder, nothing happens. When I try to open System Preferences the icon bounces in the dock a few times then disappears.

I can still get to my files (THANK GOD) if I open the apps first, but they're still listed on my desktop. If I search for a folder in spotlight it will be listed but won't open when I click on it.

Can I just uninstall this update?? I, of course, don't have a recent backup to go to. I'm already at 2 work hours wasted...

OS X 10.6.8

If it is me I would be making

a back up of all files now and then I might try to redo the security update and see how it goes. Failing that it is over my head.
