That link is not for the 9/19/2012 Snow Leopard Security Update 2012-004.
It is for the Java for OS X 2012-004 and Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 9 of 6/12/2012
Java for OS X 2012-004 was the name for the Lion Java patch while Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 9 was the name of the Snow Leopard Java patch.
You're absolutely right. Apple doesn't give details about the SL Security Update.
Thats a shame. I used to like reading the security fixes. For example here:

For what it's worth, if you actually click the second link you posted (for the non-server edition of the update), the .dmg you receive is 257 MB. Apple's summary on the right side of the download page is grossly incorrect.
Running the non-server edition of Snow Leopard here, and the Software Update app wants to send me a file weighing in at 269.9 MB.

Check here in a day or two. It usually takes about a day for Apple to publish the specifics of the security updates.

Thanks. Was surprised Snow Leopard got the update. Even more so when it was over 200mb since the Apple site lists it at 2mb. I only realised it was a security combo update when I looked at the package in Pacifist and saw the file stamps with dates going back to last year.
Beware - this update will disable any plug-ins you're using for Mail.app.
Instead of fixing a security issue that they found with the plug-in system, they just disabled plug-ins altogether.

I'm using plug-ins called WideMail and Mail.appetizer.
But regardless of what those specific plug-ins are, all plug-ins have been disabled.

GGJstudios: WideMail enables a "column-view" like UI, much like the new Mail in Lion and up.
Mail.appetizer enables a preview pane of new emails. Much like Growl except only for Mail.app.
Both plug-ins have been rendered useless with the subsequent OS updates, but my MacBook is stuck on SL, so I depended on these plug-ins for my daily workflow.
It's too bad because these plug-ins are no longer being actively developed, so who knows when, if ever, they will be updated to be compatible with the new Mail...

Mal: Are you sure your Mail.app has been updated to version 4.6?
I just installed Herald as you suggested but Mail disabled it at launch, saying it's incompatible with Mail 4.6.

stopped working on my machine with the update. I really liked Herald. I'm running Lion. Will it work if I upgrade to Mountain Lion - something I have been putting off.
Any way to undue the update and go back to where I was before the update? I have regular time machine back ups.
EDIT - just discovered Herald v. 2.1.3 works with updated Lion. No worries.

Desktop Empty??
This morning I got the notice that I had a security update to install (2012-004).
It went through the usual process and after it rebooted, my desktop was completely empty. The background photo is the same but all my icons for folders, files, etc are gone.
In addition, when I try to open Finder, nothing happens. When I try to open System Preferences the icon bounces in the dock a few times then disappears.
I can still get to my files (THANK GOD) if I open the apps first, but they're still listed on my desktop. If I search for a folder in spotlight it will be listed but won't open when I click on it.
Can I just uninstall this update?? I, of course, don't have a recent backup to go to. I'm already at 2 work hours wasted...
