27" thunderbolt display... USB 2.0 still?!?!

Just a quick rant: how come the thunderbolt 27" display, the end-of-the-range as far as Apple displays go, is still USB 2.0 and not 3.0? All Mac laptops/computers are already 3.0.

Is there any technical reason as of why Apple keeps its flagship still at 2.0 standards?

Whether you like it or not, iMac, Mac Mini, and Mac Pro are still considered current gen even if released in 2011 and they all sport USB 2.0.

Now if Apple released a refresh of the TBD and did not update to USB 3.0 then you may have something to whine about.
 
It will trickle down. Apple is going to update the whole Mac line (iMac, Mac Pro, Mac Mini, Cinema Display) with USB 3.0 mid next year. The Cinema Displays might possibly be Retina (very high chance with the way Apple has been going).

There really aren't any consumer displays that match the look of the ACD. They might have great and newer panels, but ACD is still a good standard to go by.

Hmm, curious as to your source. Much of the speculation for iMac/ACD updates has focused on next month (in which case Retina would be highly unlikely).

As always, no one really knows what Apple does outside of the higher ups at their headquarters.

However, from a guesstimate from the way Apple functions, and they have mentioned updates to the Mac Pro line a while ago for mid 2013, I would assume a newly redesigned Mac Pro, an iMac and a display to go along with it is inevitable.

The Mac Pro design hasn't been updated since the G5's.

Apple does not want to lose the professional industry which still buys Mac Pro's.

If the rMBP is a sign of Retina displays, then an external ACD will definitely have one as Mountain Lion supports Hi-DPI.

I just wish Apple cared more about the pro market and updated faster (at least ports and panels to newer LCD technologies).

Also Apple knows that if you work with the rMBP, going to the non Retina 27" Thunderbolt display is a HUGE difference when it comes to detail. They know this.

Guess I don't see the compelling causal link between Pro and iMac. Between the latter and the ACD, on the other hand, certainly.

As many in the forum have pointed out, the cost of such a large Retina display would probably prove prohibitively expensive at this juncture (though given viewing distance one might be able to provide a Retina-like experience at lower pixel densities), and it's questionable whether the gfx hardware on an iMac or attached MBP could cope with the heavy lifting.
