Very weird, but this has been happening since I got my iPhone 5 and I figure I can't be the only person, but let's see:

If I have LTE enabled, iMessage will work for a while, then break. So will push notifications. This seems to be related to other threads about the time/date being incorrect for people using Verizon iPhone 5s, but my time/date never seems to noticeably change. However, if I have LTE enabled, EVEN IF I'M USING WIFI, iMessage inevitably breaks. The only thing to solve it is to restart the phone or toggle on/off automatic date/time setting, etc. And even then, it will break again soon after.

However!

If I disable LTE in Settings > General > Cellular, this problem goes away completely and iMessage never stops working.

It would seem, from reading other threads, that something is wrong with Verizon's LTE network (I'm in LA, BTW) where it will incorrectly change the date/time of iPhone 5 devices at random which causes this whole thing to break down. Verizon, of course, claims this isn't the case. And Apple claims it is Verizon's fault.

My old iPhone 4S never had this problem, and my wife's iPhone 4 doesn't have it either, both on Verizon. It's definitely related to LTE. Anyone else?

Havent seen that issue at all on our 3 i5s. I would try reseting all networks settings in General.

Have done a network reset twice. Problem is solved for an hour or so and then returns. Where are you guys located? It's possible this LTE problem is affecting my area not yours...

I used it all last week on LTE around San Luis Obispo CA and it worked fine.

EXACTLY my problem

The problem you're describing is exactly what's happening to me. It's extremely irritating -- and totally random, given that many friends (including the person I live with!) have the same device and setup as I do with no problems. WTF are we supposed to do to fix it?

Fun update: After 6 or 7 hours, the problem came back, even with LTE disabled. So it seems to be an iPhone 5 issue specifically, not necessarily a network issue.

I am in the middle of a full reset and restore right now, hoping that solves it. Will report back.

So the restore did not fix the issue. It definitely seems to be related to the time/date issues others have reported.

However, Verizon just released a carrier update which I just installed. So far, iMessage is working again. Going to see what happens when I wake up tomorrow...

Exact same issue here, time occasionally off and iMessages going as text or not at all. Didn't connect the two till I read your post. :-/

I installed the carrier update last night as well, but later noticed the time was off when I went to bed. Need to keep an eye on this.

Verizon iPhone 5, Sacramento, CA area, spotty LTE coverage at my house

Unfortunately, the carrier update did not fix the issue. iMessage was working fine until about 10 minutes ago, now it's broken again. So are push notifications and Facetime. What a pain.

Exact same problem. I've found if I disable cellular data completely, it will work on Wi-Fi. I've tried resetting network settings, backup and restore, the carrier update (i.e., everything I can think of). And if you look in the logs (under About in settings), you can see that the apsd (Apple Push Service Daemon) is crashing frequently.

I have a ticket open with Apple, and they're working on it. At the moment, they think it might be a corrupted token but have been unable to fix it.

Interesting. Same thing here--if I turn off cellular data entirely it works and I also have tons of APNS crash logs.

I have a Genius Bar appt tonight which I assume they'll replace my phone at, but it sounds like that probably won't fix the issue.

I should probably call Apple as well. Do you have a case number I could reference?

I am having the same problem, and a lot of other people are too. See this thread: https://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=15934400#post15934400

I called Verizon, they made me jump through hoops to confirm it wasn't a network issue. The phone rep confirmed I was the 2nd call he received that day with the same issue as well. They then patched in Apple on the phone. Apple had me turn off/on factime and imessage, reset network settings, and the problem is still occurring.

You can temporarily solve the problem by shutting the phone off then on, but the problem will randomly occur again. They suggested the next step with be to restore the phone from itunes, then replace the hardware. So I will restore from itunes, but from what I've read from other unsuccessful attemps I'll just be wasting more time. This appears to be a fairly widespread Apple/Verizon problem that will require a software update.

Same issues here on my wife's iPhone 5. Ported from AT&T to Verizon. I'm not having the problem on mine (also came from AT&T). Waiting on a response from Apple about it. Calling them in the morning.

Sad news: Had my iPhone 5 replaced today and an hour later, the same bug started up again. Not really sure how to proceed now, since it seems like this is in fact not hardware related.

I am having the same exact issue here. I am glad I am not the only one. I usually turn Airplane mode off and on for a temp. fix. Please keep me updated on what Verizon or Apple says.

So here's where I'm at now:

* Replacing the phone didn't work
* Called Apple support and they're escalating to engineering group, which takes 2 biz days
* Support supervisor thinks it's a Verizon issue

Still no working iMessage, Facetime or APN. Can get them to work by flipping around date/time, resetting network settings, etc, but it always comes back.

Sure it's ur phone. Did u really thik it was a widespread LTE problem, and no one at VZW was aware of it. Should've just taken ur phone back to apple and replaced it. Then the problem would've been fixed.

Thanks for not reading the thread and writing a broken English reply.

I DID have the phone replaced. No fix.

Same problem here...I am also working with APple Enterprise support and will let you know if I hear of a permanent fix. So far the only thing that has worked is to restore the phone to factory defaults via iTunes restore option and then setup the phone as new (NOT doing a restore from backup). It was working for over 5 hours after that, but that isn't a solution as I don't want to recreate all my settings from scratch!

The only consistent factor is your iCloud account. I know it's a big pain in the butt, but try making a new one and see if the issues remain.

This is assuming, of course, that you aren't restoring from a backup. If so, try restoring as new and see if it happens again.

Edit: KnightRyder hit the nail on the head. It's a software issue, so restoring from your backup will bring the issue with it. Restore as new.

It's actually not a software issue as far as I can tell, because being signed out of iMessage does not stop it from happening.

Guy on the Apple forums says a Verizon tech thinks this is a known issue with their service and they're working on it. But who knows. Still waiting for Apple engineering to get back to me.

It's working

This has now been working for me for the past couple of days. I did perform a network reset again to be safe.
