hey guys my cousin was looking for something used for a everyday heavy use laptop he found a 17 inch 2010 for $1200
i know the 13 inch new is the same price but he wants play mmos on a bigger screen with out buying another monitor wow gw2s ect

do you think the 17 is worth that price for light gaming
also found a 15in 2010 for the same price but i7 instead of i5

If it is a 17" MBP, it does not have a SD card slot, but an ExpressCard slot. Only the 15" and 13" MBPs have that SD card slot. Maybe try to verify with the seller, if it is a 15" or 17" MBP via serial number and www.applerserialnumberinfo.com.

As for the price, it seems about right, and as for specs, I do not know.

For gaming get him a PC that has a much better graphics card rather than an overall usage computer like a Mac

my uncle said he wanted a mac so which would be best out of the 3

The 13" MBA has 1440 x 900 pixel, the 13" MBP has 1280 x 800 pixel. The 15" MBP either has 1440 x 900 or 1680 x 1050 pixel, the 17" has 1920 x 1200 pixel.
I just post this, because the specs you have posted seem to be confused. For convenience the 15" High-Res MBP might be the best bet, though a 2010 model will do just fine.
 
330M is going to struggle on newer releases like GW2. It's best to go for a Windows based laptop if your sole concern is gaming. You can get a GTX 670M/675M in a quad-core machine at that price point.

he basically wants a mac you wouldnt serve someone soup if they wanted pizza

these were what i was looking to get him like i said before I KNOW a windows based laptop would be better for those games, also both of those games don't need windows to run.

I have this same exact model, except for a few modifications. Removed SuperDrive for 1TB HDD, 256GB SSD and 8GB RAM. It runs well and fast. I use it for amateur photo editing (nothing too complex) and it works well. And also for Parallels with Windows 7. I use the gfxcardstatus app to always use the Nvidia card instead of the Intel. I used to play StarCraft II on it and it worked fine. But, I'm not sure about any of the other games.

I read somewhere that this 17" model was a high resolution display that was similar to the upgrade provided for the 13" and 15" model before. Is this true?

I am not sure I follow. :confused:
The 17" MBP has the 1920 x 1200 resolution since early 2008 (then still BTO like with the current 15" MBP and the higher resolution display), the 15" MBP has a 1440 x 900 pixel display, since 2009 or so a 1680 x 1050 BTO has been added).
The 13" MB and MBP always had the 1280 x 800 pixel, only the 13" MBA has the 1440 x 900 pixel since late 2010.

Haha. What I meant to say is this: Is the 1920x1200 resolution on this 17" considered high resolution? In 2010, for the BTO option, a high resolution upgrade wasn't available for 17" model, only the 13" and 15".

Hopefully that makes sense now.
 
Tough choice..

The machine you would need is not among the ones you have listed.
However, if he will end up not going for an additional screen, I would for sure go with the 17' model. Gw2 will work on Minimum settings on the two 2010 Models. Important: Regardless which 2010 model you choose, you will need 8 Gig of RAM for gaming Wow!
Exeption: If the 13' MacBook Air has an SSD, go for the Air!

When the 17" MBP was still sporting a 1680 x 1050 display and in early 2008 became upgradeable to 1920 x 1200 pixel, the High-Res screen was and is still considered a high resolution screen.
The 15" MBP was still sporting a measly 1440 x 900 pixel (I had one of those) until 2009, when the 1680 x 1050 pixel screen was added as BTO.
The 13" MB and 13" MBP were and are only offered with 1280 x 800 pixel and no way to upgrade to a higher resolution screen via BTO or CTO.

In shorter words, the current 17" MBP's screen resolution is considered "High Res" and could probably not get any higher, since the PPI it pushes is already maxing it for the small size screen.

Just saying that modern games are going to struggle on those systems.
 
so igo to buy the 17 inch take it home to rap it up
open it to start it up turns out to be a 15inch 2009........
after a hour trying to figure it out at micro center they finally refund me
found a 2011 mac book 15inch for the same price so ill get him that

everything went better than expected :cool:
 
Micro Center is amazing
I went to pick up the base 15 inch 2011 model for 1200
It was a open box model from a store almost 2 hours away
T he model had someone who put a password on it so I was told would have to wait 3-4 hours so I could take it home keep in mind I had reserved to pick it up and got a email saying it was ready

A manager name Joe walked up to me told me he was sorry this happened and offered me a anti glare model for the same price and the 1 gig card instead of the 512

My cousin is getting my 2011 13 inch I'm keeping this thing
