Verizon iPhone 5 visual voicemail

With the iPhone 5 on Verizon do I have to pay for Verizon's visual voice mail feature to use the ios 6 visual voicemail? Or can I cancel that feature and still be able to use the iOS 6 visual voicemail?

Included for free; just set up voicemail per usual and VVM is there. Done & done.
