You guys are so lucky to have Apple stores...

All this talk of Genius bars and popping in to see what's up. We have a local Apple shop (or at least, the nearest thing to it, which is a specialist shop selling only Apple stuff).

Wandered in last week to have a nose about. "Don't suppose you have any iphone 5's do you?" "Nope". How about the new ipod touch? Nope. Nano? No. Ok, I'll have a nose about... Where are the retina MBP's? No, haven't got any of those. What else, the new Air? No, got both of the previous models (doggy well-used demo machines on the table, filthy cables and all, previous minimum spec).

On the other hand, they did have an ipad3, the only current thing in the shop!

And, of course, three of the walls were filled with "every accessory you will ever need for your Apple". All with 30-pin connectors, of course.

It's not surprising it was empty, like shopping in the Marie Celeste.

Ok, we're not a big city, but there's only one bigger city for 2000km, so what are we suppose to do?

Well here in New Zealand every Apple product gets a massive lump added onto the price tag for some reason. Taking currency conversion and shipping into account, the 13" cMBP is $500 more expensive here than in the US, and the 15" cMBP is $1000 more expensive. It's insane.

Yeah it is a great apple store, and we have two BestBuy's, "Alaska Mac Store" which is locally owned but carry some really good stuff (booq, twelve south, etc).

But that's just Anchorage. Alaska is HUGE, with one "major" city (Fairbanks has some stuff too). And depending on where you love, is could cost $1500 just for a plane ticket to get to anchorage from another part of Alaska.

Yeap I find it very annoying how Apple products cost so much in New Zealand. I was incredibly lucky to get my 15" MPB when Dick Smith Electronics had a 10% discount on all Macs

NZ is where I'm talking about. Shipping isn't an issue, its probably cheaper to ship to NZ than USA, but is at least similar. The rMBP isn't too bad, if you take the base price 2199 divide by .8 for the currency and add 15%, you get to 3161, only 330 less than its actual price in NZ. Have you never tried buying US products outside the US before?

Speaking of which, played with the new Sony Z yesterday, and it's a joke. Yes, the screen is pretty good considering (I would have said it was great before the rMBP), but the specs are not high and the price!! $NZ4800 with only 256Gb SSD, 8Gb RAM, and a weird tiny scrapey touchpad. That makes NZ$5600 for this 2.6/16/768 look cheap!

I'm glad I was a cheapskate and went for the rMBP...

You can use services like this to get products direct from the US, thus avoiding the markup that we get in New Zealand. Only thing is, I don't know how much you'd have to pay in tax and duty to get it through customs.
 
That's the price u pay to live in the Boondocks.

Imagine when the cargo trucks (plane?) roll into town, it's like celebration? :D

You have one major advantage over someone living on Fairbanks or the bush though - you can get to either Seattle or Anchorage fairly quickly (and for much less than someone flying in from Nome, Bethel, etc).
