I am assuming that I can, but can someone please confirm this - has the form remained completely unchanged?

All 3rd gen cases will work fine on the new 4th gen ipad. As someone mentioned above the only difference is that some 4th gen cases may have a smaller cutout for the lightning connector vs. the old 30 pin dock. This means if you use your older case with a 4th gen ipad the area around your lightning connector will be wider but it will all work fine.

what about the speaker, will they be the same as the ipad mini and iphone 5? because my belkin snap sheild for ipad 3 has a cutout for the speaker and id like to use it when I get the 4th gen ipad.

The speaker "grill" is in the same location. Except for the Lightning Connector, the enhancements are all internal. It's the same external form.

Some cases might differ. I just purchases an iSkin iPad back cover that has a port cover. It is supposed to work with the 2 or 3. It has a flange that inserts into the 30 pin port. My guess is that I'm going to have to trim the flange/port plug for the 4. Otherwise it will stick out.
