Hi
Desperate for help
Have purchased a Dell Ultrasharp 2312HM
I have connected it to my macbook pro 6.2 2010 (Serial Number (system): W8012AZZAGW) via DVI cable and DVI to mini displayport connector at the mac end)
I have selected DVI input on the monitor but it just says no computer detected and goes into sleep mode
At the mac end of things, the macbooc screen flashes blue momentarily then goes back to normal.
In display preference on the mac, clicking the 'Detect displays' button has no effect whatsoever.
So in summary, the monitor is on and wired up to mac, but mac isnt detecting it
There was an identical issue from someone else back in 2012 and a long thread. I don't believe the person ever got it sorted.

...oh and Dell don't provide any support for this and say it's not compatible, but I can see from numerous threads that others have it working perpectly.

2 things I've thought of...the dell monitor instructions says it comes with a white DVI cable. Mine is black that was in the box.
I purchased a fairly cheap DVI to mini displayport adaptor on Ebay. Could this be duff? (the seller only had positive feedback)

I'm running OS 10.6.8

Help before I go mental!

thank you!

I think the cable is all it can be...buy, beg or borrow a decent one and try again.

So, your Chinese MBP has problems:p

Just kidding, but it is made in China, better delete the Serial number, it is not needed here.

As for the problem, the best way is to test the cable on a different device, does not need to be a Mac but has to be a device (PC) or so) with those connectors.
Right now you don't know if it's the Mac or the Cable.

I'll ask the dumb questions:

Is the laptop connected to the power adapter OK (not on battery)?

Did you try SMC and PRAM resets?

Thanks for the responses folks. It was the cheapest connector on Ebay. So maybe that was a duff call on my part. Unfortunately I don't know anyone else to test it with which is frustrating. Maybe have to go for a more expensive one
Agaskew - yes it's plugged in and thanks for the tip of about resets - that was all new to me. Have tried both and no difference. But great to know about that one - thanks.

...so i tried a replacement DVi to mini display port adaptor and no change. Mac does still not recognise the device. Very frustrating, will have to sell the monitor if all else fails - which it seems to be. Any other advice greatly appreciated

You should really take my above advise, as long as you don't try the display on another PC/Mac you don't know if it's the MBP or the display, it's common sense.

Example, if I have a printer but it does not work, I will test it on another PC and see if it works there, if it doesn't then the printer is the problem, not my PC/Mac.

If you don't do this you won't get any other solutions here, sorry, but that's the way trouble shooting works.
