Sold iPhone, using ipad mini as VoIP phone

I scraped along on an iPod touch with a VoIP app while I was waiting for my nexus 4 to arrive but there's no way I'd willingly do that ever again. I need to be reachable wherever I am and can't rely on wifi.
Nice. Personally I couldn't trust VoIP call quality, coverage is also an issue. I go deep into the woods and hills for my job and for pleasure and the service is poor in these areas. If my commute was predictable I could use this, but not with an iPad though. Something smaller.
I find VOIP works better on Android than iOS.
Problem is that VOIP apps can't run in the background for very long. It gets put to sleep by iOS, so you aren't always connected.
So expect many missed calls. Also expect the occasional drop calls and distorted low quality calls.

I'd just hate during a dinner date, pull out my iPad to make a call. She would has to be a total nerd, and one nerd on a dinner date is enough.
Just played with Skype again after many years, pretty good quality, but of course this is not a nearly big enough sample, and I have a feeling it would suck international.

aren't you paying practically the same as an iPhone plan? the 10 a month for the voip service plus cellular service for the iPad mini?
You can add a tablet to family plans for 10 bucks. 10 bucks does not add any data allowance to the shared plan. So you would be using other persons data allocation.
Although I won't give up my Nexus 4 for calls, I did set up my Nexus 7 (with cellular) to make calls using Groove IP. I tried it while I was out driving on T-Mobile and the audio was all broken up. It's fine on Wifi just sitting here. It uses Google voice to take and make calls and receive text messages. Just wish it was better while moving in the car.
The sound quality is the problem. I use gmail to make calls on my MacBook air and the sound quality is poor to average.
