I am going to be graduating from Veterinary medicine school in a few years, and eventually would like to start my own practice. I've been looking at the current software that's on the market to run a veterinary practice but in a lot of ways it is lacking what I consider usAbility. how would I go about finding someone to write a program for me this quality and about how much does it cost to do something like this. I am looking to run this on iPads in the practice

a good, well thought out custom iOS app could run well upwords of 10k.. obviously it's depends on what you need, etc., aswell on available capital, and if you're goal is to create a resale vet app, or just a proprietary one for your practice.

FWIW, a buddy of mine wrote a series of articles detailing the cost and effort that goes in to crafting a high-quality iOS app:

I read the article. It makes a lot of good points. As a retired programmer, I think the article is right on the dot.

For the OP it might make sense to try to contact the developer of whatever you are using now and discuss improvements, possibly offer to pay for some of it.

It's worth a shot but quite frankly this never works.

OP - Developing apps for the iPad is hard. Developing great apps for the iPad is even harder. Just stick it out or maybe use a web application.

Hopefully someone will disrupt that market category.

Good article. No knock on the article or its references, but this is close to a year old (published in January). Since then 59 million or more iPads have been sold increasing the possible market size a lot. Simple apps for consumers are priced around 99¢ or free. Something for professionals could probably be priced at $5 or more. If it provides value in your job it is worth it.

The time estimation section was good.
