Hello All,

I just wanted get your thoughts and opinions of the below situation, me working all day on 11inch MBA is a bad idea or not.

I basically hate slow computers and I get frustrated quite easily with them. I have been working mostly from home the last 4 months or so, and I have a 27inch iMac, one of the more powerful specs, which I bought earlier this year. I was using this iMac in my office before 4 months ago, so when I decided to work from home, I took it with me.

I also own an 11inch MBA which I bought last year. I wanted the smallest laptop I could get from Apple but the most powerful in the small. So I put an i7 processor and plenty of memory in it. For a 11inch MBA it's pretty good, it can handle CS6, everyday photoshop tasks OKish. Better than most PC's I have owned.

Now, I have decided I need to be in the office again, it may be temporary, or it may be permanent - I don't know. Now, I don't want to move the iMac back and forth again. I work almost 12 hours or so most days in front of a computer, or at least my computer is on 12 hours or more.

I basically need a stable and fast computer. I run a lot of applications at the same time. Now, none of these are really powerful applications, so I don't really use things like CS6 or photoshop etc. It's standard office applications like Outlook, loads of browser based SAAS/Cloud applications etc. But I will have 10 ore more browser applications open at the same time and various installed applications as well.

Now I know MacBook Pro's are so much more powerful than MBA's. However. I don't like to waste money unnecessarily especially if the MBA will do the job fine. There is a side of me that is looking for an excuse to by a MacBook Pro. I am trying to become a more considerate person, and less wasteful. However, I also won't accept the MBA becoming damaged through over use or running very slowly when I am trying to work.

So the question I want to ask is:

1. Is it OK to run a MBA for 12 hours a day, regularly, basically using it like a desktop?
2. If I use it like a desktop is there any chance it will damage it?

3. Do you think MBA will cope fine with the give tasks? I know I will only know when I try.

I ask the above questions because I am not sure if the MBA is designed for long continuous use? I may be wrong. I would like to hear from anyone who has used MBA for long hours regularly for a long time. There must be loads of developers or other professions who used MBA's for long continuous use?

It's my first MBA so I am not sure how far I can push it like this!

Thank you in advance.

I use my MBA roughly 14-18 hours a day. It lives on my desk when I'm at home. I have my charger and video cable (for an external monitor). I use mine daily and got 8GB of RAM. I wish I got the 256GB over the 128GB, I'll trade up after next years model. Other than that I also have a 1TB USB3 external and an 18TB server for backup and my media.

I have it schedule to turn off at 2 every night (I should be in bed by then). Then it wakes up at 7:30 every day. It's my alarm clock. I love the chime to wake up to. Gets me excited to program for the day.

There is nothing "lightweight" about the Air. You could use easily use it all day everyday (like I do) for many years with no issues.

Guys, thank you all. You have told me exactly what I needed to know.

Thanks.

I have been using an MBA as my primary computer for two years, starting with a 2011 13" i5/4gb/256gb and upgrading to a 2013 11" i7/8gb/512gb recently. Most of the time it is on my desk connected to a big screen and external keyboard - it is on and connected to AC power for 12-14 hours a day. From time to time I "exercise" the battery.

No problems at all with the 2011 MBA after almost two years - I sold it to a close friend and would not have been comfortable doing that if I felt there were any issues related to my own use.

You already know what to expect from the MBA in terms of performance so you shouldn't hesitate to use it like this if you want. Of course, there could be some wear and tear related to hauling the MBA back and forth from home to work daily, but that shouldn't be a problem if you're careful.

Hi Guys, one more question. I would prefer not to turn my MBA off if I can, so that all my browser and all my applications are on or set just as I left them. Now is it an issue to put the laptop to sleep and carry it back and forth from home to the office?

This will not be a problem at all. I barley turn mine of at all. Sure one a week maybe but otherwise it's sleeping only so I can get back to what I was doing really quick.

When shutting down you can reopen current applications or put them in the Login It'ems so they open at start up.

For me that's Mail, Messages, Reminders and Calendar. Otherwise if I leave Safari or Chrome open they come back too and I can just restore the tabs.
