iPad mini Safari on iPad Mini retina crashing. 3rd iPad!

Will start by saying I only bought my iPad mini about 6 weeks ago so it's fairly new! And I didn't have this problem with my 1st gen iPad mini or iPhone 4s or iPhone 5s!

As title says, safari keeps randomly crashing on my retina mini. Can be browsing any website any time it will do it, completely random. Sometimes remembers what page I was on, sometimes I end up back at the favourites tab when I reopen safari.

After a week dealing with apple support trying different resets and backups etc they eventually told me it must be a hardware problem. And made me an appointment at an apple store.

Went to the apple store and the genius was sure it was a software problem, after I told him apple support told me it was hardware he took my ipad and gave me a refurb replacement. He said if this one keeps doing it then it must be a limitation of the device!!!!

What?!? how can it be a limitation of the device?! A device which is primarily used for browsing the internet can't even do that! It doesn't make sense.

I have read about memory problems etc on various websites and forums. Has anyone else had this problem!? It's getting really annoying. I don't want to have to return this to where I bought it, but looks like I'm going to have to start using my LG G Pad! And I hate android

And now the ipad just completely restarted its self, back to apple logo! Whilst browsing this forum! Not a very memory intensive task.

Hopefully going to return it this week.

In using full size iPads and iPad mini's over a 3 year period, I will say that I've experienced less than 5 crashes in those 3 years. I have more crashes with Chrome on Win 7 than iPads in Safari.
It may be the sites you navigate are poorly written or massive.
The Drudge report got me once....

Usually browse this site and forum, mobile versions of websites. News sites. Lots of forums which are mainly just text.

And the latest crash rebooted the ipad, which is something that has never happened to me before. My ipad 2 was fine, both iPhones have been fine. 1st gen iPad mini was fine. TWO retina minis crashing on me multiple times a day. We also use a 1st gen iPad mini at work daily for processing finance applications, registering customers purchases etc all on safari and never had it crash on me once


I am returning it tomorrow. Going to exchange it for a fresh one, if that is the same then I will get a refund and maybe get the next gen whenever that comes out.

Unfortunately, it's likely a Safari issue so no fix there. Some things that may alleviate the problem: update the firmware (I've found the Safari crashes tend to occur a lot more often on iOS 7.0 than on iOS 7.1), manually close apps that are not in use, restore iPad to factory settings. Note, these are meant to alleviate the issue, not get rid of it altogether. Imho, no matter how efficient iOS may be, in this day and age, having just 1GB RAM is really pushing the envelope particularly when you need to power a 2048x1536 display.

As for browsing not being a memory intensive task, you'd actually be surprised. Even on my desktops, Firefox and Chrome tend to be my biggest memory hogs and that's browsing mostly text websites (forums, etc) with Adblock Plus enabled.

Hopefully the next gen will have more memory then. Restoring does stop the crashing for maybe a day or two. But who wants to restore their ipad every day just because it's buggy?! Not me. I think I will just get a refund and use my lg g pad, which I have never had a problem with, apart from the fact it is running android haha.

A friend of mine says his iPad Air hasn't crashed once. And others with iPad airs and minis haven't mentioned it.

I think this boils down to individual usage patterns and websites visited. Some people experience it regularly. Others don't. There's actually a couple of threads discussing this very same issue (as well as frequent web page reloads in Safari).

I am having the same problems with my retina mini. I always thought it was because I jailbroke mine... :rolleyes:

Have you updated to iOS 7.1.1? I used to experience constant Safari/springboard crashes pre iOS 7.1.

Sounds like we use our devices for doing about the same thing. I would certainly take it back in and get another because it's behaving badly.

I'd second this.

Since ios7.1 - the safari crashes have decreased dramatically. I've only had a handful since 7.1. But I could crash safari a dozen times an hour in 7.0 if I really tried.

I got a replacement retina mini 2 days ago. So far Safari has crashed once. That was on 7.0.

I have updated to 7.1.1 today and had no crashes yet.

Honestly, when I was having this issue it was a corrupt backup, so when I restored I pooched the iPad. I went back to the old iPad, did a new backup and a new restore to the new iPad and everything worked. Happens.

Sorry for bumping an old thread, didn't see any reason to make a new thread.

I'm on my 3rd iPad mini retina 16gb, within the last 3 months, and Safari keeps crashing. Even when just readi stuff right here on mac rumours!

And right now my iPad is quite hot just from browsing using safari.

Been to apple with my first mini, they said its a limitation of the device and have me a refurb, I too the refurb back to where I bought it and they replaced with a brand new iPad mini. Now this one is crashing too.

I can't be the only one who is bothered by this? My iPad can't even do a basic task such as browsing the internet, which is what I mainly use it for!!!!! It's more or less useless.

Unfortunately, Safari has been a little buggy on iOS7.
Fortunately, there are many other browsers for your iPad. Chrome, iCabMobile, Mercury and Dolphin are the ones I have tried and they are all awesome. Give any of these a try and see if they work better (I think they will)!

I think it's bad memory modules. My ipad 1 crashed constantly and it turned out to be bad memory, but t was waaayyyy past the warranty date when I figured it out. I have a new rMini that I use on a lot of memory-intensive sites and apps. 3rd party apps have crashed a lot, but Safari has crashed quite infrequently. I would bet some of the refurb's were returned BECAUSE of these memory issues. Man, I really hate soldered, non-replaceable ram.

Bad memory On 3 different minis? 3 months apart?! One of which was an apple refurb?

Maybe they are part of the same batch. Either way... It's not very good. I'm really really close to trying to return it for a refund and not bothering with iPad anymore. My iPad 2 and my 1st gen iPad mini performed better! iPhone 5s with ios 8 beta on is running better at the moment!


Also.. Will any 3rd party browsers make use of the keychain?

Tried restoring from backups as requested by apple support to figure out what was causing it. Other than that they have all been set up as brand new iPads.

Try your hand at a different browser: Atomic, Mercury, Dolphin all have success rates in the MR forums.

Funny, but in my job I study reports of crashing iPads, among many other things. Almost every crash was the fault of a poorly written javascript advertisement.

PS: @Two2Seven: Have you turned it off and on? Haha!
