It will be interesting to see if we get USB 3.1 ports in new MacBooks starting in Q3 or we have to wait until 2015. Having the higher transfer speeds means we may be able to utilize SSD speed capabilities vs. trying to use SSDs via USB 3.0.

USB still won't enable TRIM support, so having an SSD over USB is out of the question for me.
 
Based on trends, Apple won't put in USB 3.1 until Intel builds it into their platform. They don't seem to do add-on cards.

Understood. I use TB based drives at home for libraries and a TC for backup. But for quick backups during road trips, a USB based SSD without trim works for me.

We should see that by the end of 2015.
