does anyone think its likely the airport range will get an update soon? as I'm thinking of purchasing an airport extreme or express (can't decide which!)

I would guess not likely for the Extreme and maybe for the Express. Usually these updates are to incorporate some new network technology like 802.11ac with the last new Extreme, and I just don't see anything new on the network from that they could add as feature to the Extreme. I could see them maybe updated the Express to 802.11ac though.
I would hold off until after next Monday WWDC even though since we are so close.
