The bad things of the cloud...
Yesterday I had an experience that gave me a lot to think about our dependence on cloud services for almost all computing stuff we do.
I am using Apple stuff a lot as most of you know. Two weeks ago I changed my payment info to Click and buy, because I wanted to pay with my bank account instead of my credit card. What I forgot to do was to check if my account information at Clickandbuy was current. Yesterday I wanted to update some apps on my iPad but I got an error message that my AppleID was disabled! The message was shocking to me, so I started troubleshooting. On my Mac I could successfully log in to my account. I even change the password just in case, but my account was disabled for new purchases. Actually it was worse than that. I couldn't download any updates or even access my purchased software. If I wanted to install one of my devices yesterday, I wouldn't be able to access and install software I had already paid for!!! What happened? Clickandbuy locked my account without notifying me and also notified Apple, who in turn locked my AppleID too. I got no notification , nothing! I was outraged because Apple didn't inform me. I also believe that it's illegal for Apple to restrict me from downloading my purchased apps. I understand them blocking my account from buying new stuff, but I should always have access to my purchases..
I felt blocked, trapped, even paralyzed!
I contacted Apple support and sent many mails to Tim Cook. I also changed my payment information on both Clickandbuy and iTunes. The 31 that I owed was paid yesterday night and my Clickandbuy account was unlocked. They also charged me 15 for nothing!!!
Of course I should be more careful with my Clickandbuy account and should keep my payment information current, but Apple has no right to restrict me from accessing software I have already paid.
This was a lesson for me and shows that being dependent on a single id for almost everything can be scary if one day Apple decides to pull the plug...
I am sure it's not only Apple, Google and Microsoft would do the same..
Cloud computing is great but also scary...
Companies have too much information about us and can change our life to the worse if they wanted it that..
Apple unlocked my account today, and it felt like freedom again..
