Playing movies in lower quality

Hi all

I use Movist to watch shows, these shows are in 720p but I want to view them in a lower quality as 720p makes my fans op my laptop spin up and stay this way during the entire show.

With lower quality shows, this doesn't happen. As I don't care about the added quality, I want the 720p shows to be automatically scaled down. Is there a program that does this or is Movist capable of doing this? I don't want to re-encode them, I just want it to happen automatically, if this is possible.

Most of my shows are in the .mkv format
