So I'm mainly looking for perhaps some confirmation on my understanding of the current state of Macs and 4K displays.

I have a Sony 65" 4K TV, and having recently purchased a new Haswell rMBP, I was looking forward to using the TV as a display, however I've found that I'm stuck at 30Hz refresh rate. After much investigating, it seems that this is the situation:

- With the 10.9.3 update, my MacBook can now output 4K over HDMI and Thunderbolt (Mini DisplayPort), however, only MDP allows for 60Hz refresh- the HDMI port, being 1.4, is limited to 30Hz.

- My Sony 4K TV recently received an over-the-air firmware update to upgrade its HDMI 1.4 ports to HDMI 2.0, enabling 60Hz refresh. The problem is that the TV does not have any (Mini) DisplayPort inputs, only HDMI 2.0.

So, am I correct in understanding that I'm basically still stuck as far as 60Hz 4K? As far as I can see, either I need to wait for Apple to release a firmware update to upgrade the MacBook's HDMI 1.4 port to HDMI 2.0, or I need to wait for someone to release a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI 2.0 adapter that supports 60Hz 4K. Neither solution seems to currently exist.

Am I correct in my understanding? I've read some reports that state that the HDMI port on my MacBook Pro cannot be upgraded to 2.0 with a simple firmware update, however it seems that Sony had no problem doing just that for my TV. And also, is it likely just a matter of time before someone releases a compatible MDP to HDMI adapter that supports 4K @ 60Hz, or will such an adapter not be feasible to produce?

Thanks for any info!
